PACS Light-Up Project

「我們的愛不會打烊」感恩祈福燈

With the start of 2020, COVID-19 took the world by storm, spreading across continents and changing how we live. We have had to adapt to these uncertain times and this new reality of working and studying from home. While we continue to teach students remotely, Palo Alto Chinese School strives to bring a reminder of hope and joy to students’ lives.

Inspired by paintings and essays written by students, teachers present students' wishes in this year’s ”Lighting Lanterns for Hope and Appreciation” event. Through the medium of lanterns, we want to capture students’ thoughts, feelings, perspectives on their growth and experiences, with each lantern and their spinning carousels telling stories of life and love. This is a dazzling cultural lantern box display.

Origin of Light-Up

The Palo Alto Chinese School (PACS) Light-Up project is based on the Light Up project from Mr. Eric Chen 陳雨禾老師 of Taipei, Taiwan. Mr. Chen is a teacher at the WanFu Elementary School and came up with Light-Up story-telling, an innovative teaching project where his work was also displayed at the 2019 Maker Faire in Tokyo.

We thank Mr. Chen for generously allowing the PACS Culture Class to use his Light-Up concept to express PACS students' thoughts and writings about life under COVID-19.

PACS Culture Class

The Culture Class @Palo Alto Chinese School, currently in its second year of teachings, is a new offering at the school with the goal of imparting various Chinese cultural knowledge to students in an easy-going style based on day-to-day events, holidays, traditions, practices that are familiar to families of Chinese descent but may not know the meaning behind them. Thru crafts, drama, performances, readings and even simple cooking activities, the classes strive to allow students to naturally learn in a fun and educational style and find appreciation for the culture.
